What is the IELTS Writing Test?
The IELTS Writing Test is one of the four components of the IELTS Exam, i.e., Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The three of these four IELTS Exam parts happen on the same day – Listening, Reading and Writing. The total time-span of these three is 2 hours and 45 minutes, of which, 60 minutes is for the IELTS Writing test part. The Speaking part of the IELTS Exam is taken separately.

What is the timespan and the basic structure of the IELTS Writing test?
The entire IELTS Writing test (including both the parts) is for 60 minutes. The IELTS Writing test comprises of two parts. Part 2 (or Task 2) accounts for two-thirds of the points, and you should therefore spend two-thirds of the time on this Task, i.e., 40 minutes.

There are four focus areas to concentrate on in the IELTS Writing test, before actually beginning to write. Each of these four areas carries 25% marks each. You must write around 250 words. The four focus areas are:
- Task response (did you answer the question?)
- Coherence and cohesion (does you answer hang together, making it easier for the reader to follow your argument?)
- Lexical resource (vocabulary; is it appropriate? Is it correct?)
- Grammar (do you use a wide variety of grammatical structures? Do you use them correctly?)
